Why Using The Wrong Primer Is Messing With Your Makeup Game

Primers are our secret weapon, they keep your look locked in and perfect your skin in seconds. If you don’t already own a primer, how have you been managing? Makeup artists and beauty lovers have been using them for years, hence the flawless skin on the catwalks and the reason for poreless skin on the red carpet (#GOALS)! They’re one of the most important products in our makeup kits – the right one will make your makeup last all day and create an airbrushed look. Alternatively, the wrong primer can result in completely the opposite – sliding makeup, visible pores, and short-term results. We’re here to help you decode what a bomb primer looks like, and which one will give you the best results for your skin type.

Why you need a primer

If you’re wearing foundation, primer should be your first step! It’ll prep your skin for product application and help your makeup stay boujee all day long. Many primers also contain beauty-boosting ingredients, essential oils, and vitamins that’ll give your skin a serious boost and a hit of hydration. Primers aren’t just for your face either, there are different areas primers can target. Here’s the 411 on the different types of primers:
Face primer: A face primer can help your makeup last longer, diminish the appearance of pores, balance redness, hydrate your skin, and even protect you from free radicals. You can also find the best primer to suit your skin type, so whether you’re oily, dry, or need color correction, you can find one to suit your specific needs.
Eyeshadow primer: If your eyeshadow always settles in your crease, then you need a primer to keep the powder in place. Eyeshadow primers can also intensify eyeshadow pigment, so you can build up layers for a more dramatic look.
Lip primer: By quickly adding a lip primer, you can prevent the ‘cracked lips look’ as it’ll create a more even base. It’ll also add a little moisture, giving you a fuller pout while guaranteeing that the product will stay on your lips, not on your coffee cup.
Before you buy a face primer it’s really important to test it with your foundation first, to ensure they blend well together. It’s really easy: If the formulas are the same (both silicone-based or both water-based) they’ll blend more easily. For example, if you have oily skin and are using a silicone-based primer, your foundation should also contain a form of silicone, like Dimethicone. But this doesn’t always mean that two different formulas are going to clash every time, as it’s more to do with how the pigments are suspended in the formula and the balance of ingredients, so if you had a cream primer and an oil-based foundation they could blend beautifully. The key thing to consider is whether the formula of both products will suit your skin type and then you should test them together to see how well they mix.

Picking the right face primer for your skin type:

Oily/ Acne-Prone Skin

The formula to look for: Lightweight, silicone.
Key Ingredients: Noncomedogenic, salicylic acid, BHA’s.
The key thing to look for is a water or silicone based primer. Silicone-based primers have a slightly thicker consistency which will help to smooth out any acne scars or large pores. It’ll also help fight breakouts by creating a protective barrier between environmental stressors and your skin. Look out for salicylic acid, as this will help absorb any excess oil or sebum, minimizing shine throughout the day! Our favorite is Benefit’s POREfessional Primer $31.

Sensitive/ Dry Skin

The formula to look for: Cream or oil.
Key Ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, jojoba oil, rosehip oil, almond oil, vitamin C (fragrance-free).
A primer is essential for sensitive or dry skin, as it’ll add some much-needed moisture and allow your foundation to blend, rather than being absorbed. Look for primers with essential oils, like almond oil or jojoba as they’re really nourishing but are also gentle on your skin. A radiance primer with a pearl finish is ideal for your skin type, as it’ll leave your skin looking dewy and fresh. Our The Complexion Perfection – Pre-makeup Base Primer, $35, gives a really luxurious finish and is super nourishing and hydrating.

Normal/ Combination Skin

The formula to look for: Lotion.
Key Ingredients: vitamin C, vitamin E.
You can use almost all primers – lucky you – but try a primer filled with antioxidants and vitamins to help maintain your skin’s natural balance and glow. We love Farsali unicorn essence, $54, it’s a blogger fav for a reason! It smooths and hydrates, and because it’s a water-based formula, it won’t leave your skin feeling greasy, so it’s ideal if you’re still prone to a little shine on your T-zone.

Mature Skin

Formula to look for: Cream base.
Key Ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, Vitamin E, AHA’s, retinol.
A good primer can honestly make you look five years younger instantly, hiding the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by filling them in to provide a more even base. Look for a primer that’s full of vitamins and hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, as this will hydrate your skin and improve the elasticity of the skin, giving it a firmer appearance. Try Olay’s Anti-Wrinkle Firm and Lift 2-in-1 Primer, $11, it’s a lightweight moisturizer as well as a primer!

How to apply primer

  • Once you’ve completed your skincare regime, apply a pea-sized amount of primer onto your face using your fingers. The heat of your hands will help the product absorb into your skin, whereas using a brush or sponge means it will only sit on the surface. Then let the primer sit for 30 seconds before you apply your makeup.
  • To lock in your look apply a setting spray or translucent powder to finish.
We swear as soon as you add this product to your makeup regime you’ll begin to wonder how you ever lived without it. For our other skin guides, check out our post on cleansing oilsmoisturizer and toners to keep your skin slaying.

Iconic Beauty Decoded: How Kat Von D’s Tattoo Liner Became A Cult Essential

Why Primark Beauty Might Just Be The Best Thing We Discovered This Year

Yes, you read that title right, Primark is now doing beauty! The UK’s fav highstreet store has branched into beauty, and we’re pretty damn excited about it – for obvious reasons. We’ll just start by mentioning that there’s a 28-shade eyeshadow palette that costs £4 ($5.50) – that’s less than 15p per shadow! Are we expecting amazing pigmentation and long-lasting lipsticks, no, but we’re down to try them anyway!
Primark’s new makeup collection, PS, has pretty much everything, from foundation and contour sticks to liquid eyeliner, glitter palettes, lip liners, nail varnish and tons more. You could probably fill an entire makeup bag for less than £30, so of course, we had to play with them, here’s what we thought:

Gold Rush 28-Shade Glitter Palette, £4

This palette is a combo of 14 nude, cream formulas and 14 glitters in a gel formula. The color payoff is not insane, but it’s also not terrible – with a little building up the creams work well enough, although they do crease. You can also pat them on top of cheekbones for a little highlight too. The glitters are pretty intense and actually have amazing staying power; they didn’t fall on our cheeks AT ALL. The glitters look really pretty patted on top of the eyelid, either on top of a cream or powder, but if you’re expecting a densely packed layer of glitter, you won’t get that. The packaging is very plastic, but for £4 we’re not complaining because we have so much to play with.

Matte Metallic Liquid Lipstick, £3.50

The bronze shade is surprisingly pigmented, so you can wear it alone, or use it on top of a liquid lipstick and it will give a metallic finish. It’s not super long-lasting, so expect to reapply!

Insta Girl Diamond Lip topper, £2.50

These glitter glosses are exactly what you would expect; they give a pretty shimmer to lips that are not in your face or excessively glittery. They’re a bit sticky, and they smell like the sweet glosses of the 90s, but we love the throwback.
We also tried the nail varnishes (£1.50), and we loved the holographic shades. We tried ‘Glitter Tips’, (a gel glitter formula designed to add sparkle to the end of your lashes), which was definitely a miss – glitter at the end of your lashes just doesn’t work! Overall we’ll say that the Primark collection is pretty much what you can expect, not amazing quality and the packaging of some eyeshadow palettes is very basic, but for the price, we love that this gives you the chance to play, especially if you’re not massively into makeup or just want to try out new trends.

The Kevyn Aucoin Prismatic Highlighting Trio

Holla! Or rather, holographic. Or prismatic. Or prismagic.
WOW! These highlighters are chunky, but more on that in a sec… I was actually drawn in by the packaging at first. The Kevyn Aucoin Prismatic Highlighting Trio ($48) looks like Hollywood movie magic. It shifts colors at different angles, going from yellow to blue to orange to purple, and sometimes all of them at the same time, which is cool, but also CRAZY.
It’s also quite representative of what’s inside.
There are three glittery highlighters, and they don’t look like much in their pans. On skin, though, we’re talking unicorn-level glitter and shine, and the flecks of green, blue and orange glitter are BIG and flashy — so not at all what I’ve come to expect from Kevyn Aucoin.
I mean, the shadows feel fab. They’re almost creamy-caliber bouncy and soft, so they’re easy to pick up with a finger or a brush. They’re a lot like the awesome metallics Urban Decay did in the Heavy Metals Metallic Eyeshadow Palette from the Holiday 2017 collection, but with much larger bits of glitter.

From the Chanel Spring-Summer 2018 Collection: Chanel Les 9 Ombres Multi-Effects Eyeshadow Palette

Have you been to Chanel lately? — like within the last couple years? Because every time I go there, it’s like — and I mean this in a good way — I’m about to see what’s behind door number three in The Price Is Right. I don’t know what’s gonna be there! Will it be a goat? A trip to Italy? Will there be a red Radio Flyer wagon? I JUST DON’T KNOW. And those fun, frequent surprises are making me an even bigger fan of the brand.
Ever since Lucia Pica took the reins, there have been so many creative twists and turns, especially with color. She does a lot of themed collections, and yes, Chanel has always liked themed launches, but Lucia’s themes and visions always seem strong, and I totally get what she’s trying to do.
The collections are often travel related, and the colors and textures will refer to places she’s visited and lived. This one for spring/summer is a homage to her hometown of Naples, Italy. It’s like, bright explosive colors — greens, blues, yellows, reds. Those are the visuals, but you know me, much as I love color, I also love neutrals, and there are many lovely neutrals here, too, especially in the eyeshadow palette, which, by the way, is SUCH a nice surprise.
It’s a nine-pan palette called Les 9 Ombres, and it’s $70, which is expensive, but it’s a relative “bargain” for Chanel, considering that they’ve done other palettes with five eyeshadows for $50.
And everything in it is wearable — yes, including the blue and green in the middle.
(Side note: even if you don’t consider yourself a colorful eyeshadow person, I still totally believe that you can work both of these shades. You could use them as eyeliners — do the thinnest line on the upper lash line if you’re shy! — or mix the green or the blue into one of the neutrals, like the taupe, or the bronze on the lower right-hand side, and then pop that on your lids for a twist of unexpected but totally conservative color.)
You’ll notice that almost all of the shades in this eyeshadow palette are neutrals, which, you know, yay for usability! — but also, the eyeshadows are even higher quality than usual. As if that’s even possible! Chanel stepped it up. Well, more like leaped up! The shadows feel almost incomprehensibly good.

From the Chanel Spring-Summer 2018 Collection: Mare-Chiaro Stylo Yeux Waterproof Eyeliner, or “When Green Is Good”

So, I collect a lot of things. Like, right now I’m collecting broken ballpoint pens, apparently. LOL! I have six of them on my desk, and NONE OF THEM WORK. I just need to throw them away…
I don’t know what my problem is. I think I might be a hoarder in training…
Actually, I know I am, and I have to fight the urge to hoard daily, but that’s another story for another time! AHEM.
I also collect pencils… Chanel eyeliner pencils, that is. And if you don’t know about the Stylo Yeux line, allow me to rock your world. I believe they are, dare I say it, the best high-end liners around.
Stylo Yeux is Chanel’s line of skinny twist-up waterproof pencils, and the basic black shade from the permanent line, 88 Noir Intense, is my go-to black liner and all-time fave.
Seriously, I could write a book of sonnets about it, and some of the LE shades are also epic, like Noir Petrole and Legendary Green.
The Spring-Summer 2018 Collection introduces a gorgeous $33 LE green called Mare-Chiaro, which is a borough in Naples, Italy (thanks, Interwebz!), Chanel Global Creative Makeup and Color Designer Lucia Pica’s hometown.

More From the Chanel Spring-Summer 2018 Collection: 824 Verderame, 66 L’Indomabile, 794 Poppea, 792 Aphrodite and 50 Nero Metallo

Viva l’Italia! Anybody wanna go to Naples? This afternoon…? We can tell our families that Lucia Pica and Chanel made us do it. I can pack a bag and be ready to go in an hour…
YEAH, RIGHT! Who am I kidding? You know it would take me at least a half a day to pack my makeup.
OK, maybe a full day. ðŸ˜Š
Lucia is shaking things up at Chanel with all kinds of color, and her latest collection, Spring-Summer 2018, is a shout-out to her hometown of Naples, Italy.
If Naples looks anything like the blues, greens, reds and yellows in this launch, I could easily fall in love with it. So let’s go, yeah? If you know a good travel agent, call her and get the hookup! Girls trip, April 2018!
OK, back to reality…
Spring-Summer 2018 is a pretty big launch, and so far I know I like the eyeshadow palette and the green liner.
Here are some quick thoughts on the other pieces I’ve tried (some which I like more than others).

Ombre Premiere Longwear Cream Eyeshadow in 824 Verderame($36, limited edition)

824 Verderame reminds me of a metallic cream version of MAC Club eyeshadow, but without the brown, and I love it with a matte brown in the crease, and either a charcoal or dark green liner on the water lines. It’s pigmented and GORGEOUS. It also dries in less than 30 seconds, so don’t dilly-dally! — or you’ll end up with harsh edges (a lesson I learned the hard way). Keep the small white brush that comes with the pot, too, because it’s surprisingly great and easy to use. The bristles deposit lots of color

MAC Padma Lakshmi Collection: Eye Shadow X 4 in 70’s Sunset

Hi there! I’m Karen, your friendly neighborhood beauty addict, and I’m a Bay Area girl who hoards brown eyeshadow and covets coral lipstick. Every morning, I wake up and say, “I’m going to do something other than a smoky eye today.” Then…I end up doing a smoky eye anyway (most days). When I’m not putting on makeup, taking pictures of makeup or writing about makeup, you’ll find me hanging out with my hubby (“El Hub”), my 23-month-old daughter (Connor Claire) and my cat (Tabs).
